Jake got off the bus today and said that his tooth fell out at school. I was all excited for him - I knew it was loose but hadn't realized how loose - then the sad face came. He literally LOST his tooth. He and his good buddies, Jack and Emily, were 'wrestling' while they were waiting to get back into school after recess and somewhere in the goofing around his tooth was knocked out. He is very unclear exactly what happened, doesn't know who hit it or with what, but he does know that he was giggling so much that the tooth fell out of his mouth. Well, it hasn't been seen since. He was very sad because now he doesn't have anything for the Tooth Fairy - no concern about the tooth, just the Tooth Fairy.
His teacher, Ms. Frank, assured him he could just leave a note for her and she'd understand. Jake was still upset about it so I told him we'd run to school and have a look (knowing we probably wouldn't find it!). No luck. After the tooth search, we stopped at Aunt Pam's to see Amelia's new pink cast and she told us that the Tooth Fairy has special powers and knows where to find lost teeth. So...we wrote a note and all is well. Except the part that we had to add on to the bottom of the note, Jake wants the Tooth Fairy to tell him if she found the tooth yet. Hmmmm..... what happens if by chance the tooth shows up? I know, it isn't likely. Those baby teeth are tiny but one never knows!

Happy Halloween 2010
It turned out to be a fun Halloween weekend. Jake had his school party on Friday, where they got dressed up and played Bingo cards with the residents at Pine Villa Nursing Home. They also frosted the cookies that they made on Tuesday and had a little party with their 6th grade buddies.
Saturday night the kids got dressed up and we went to Grandma and Grandpa Bergmann's. We also surprised two of their neighbors - everyone was prepared though. We had another wonderful supper and the boys had some time to play outside.
Sunday Sam had his first solo tractor ride with Dad. I needed a break so Curt took him in the tractor while Ben, Jake and I went looking for deer tracks. I'm not any kind of hunter but the boys think it is fun. We found a few deer tracks but the highlight of the walk was seeing all the beaver trails and a small tree that they had cut down. Sam enjoyed his tractor ride so well, he fell asleep and slept on the floor of the tractor most of the time...figures!
Sunday evening the boys got dressed up again and we headed out trick or treating. First to the Feldewerd grandparents, to Uncle Paul's and to Moening's. After those we went to New Munich and walked from house to house for a bit. Jake really wanted to walk in town, so he and I shared our first town trick or treating together. It was fun to see all the other kids out. Ben and Sam rode with Curt in the van - Ben just really doesn't dig Halloween all that much. It was an improvement from last year - he at least wore his costume and went to a few doors!

The last month in review
I've been very tardy on my updates the last month or so. Fall is a crazy time around here plus is was an absolutely beautiful fall so we tried to be outside as much as we could. I did find a little time for myself. I took a practical nutrition class on Thursday nights for 8 weeks. It was very interesting and eye opening. Now just to work the new good habits in and slowly get rid of the old habits!
On of my boys' favorite things is riding in the tractor and combine. Since Jake was in school this fall, Ben got a little extra time. He and his uncle Cory had some serious bonding time. He's always loved Cory but this tied the knot. All his big hugs were saved for Dad and Cory, mom was only blessed with 'quick short' ones. It is amazing - he can spend hours and hours out there and rarely gets bored of it.
Jake spent some time in the tractor but mostly wanted to spend the beautiful fall days playing with Carly and Brent after school. Since they ride the bus home together, they always seem to come up with some sort of plan by the time they get home. Sometimes they would come over, or they'd play at the shop but it was always a good time. We'll all miss those days as the weather turns cold.
Sam even had his first combine ride this fall. He and I rode along with Curt for a few rounds one afternoon. He just sat quiet and took it all in. Towards the end of his ride he was trying to inch his way onto Curt's lap - soon we'll have another 'driver' in the mix. 10 years from now Cory should have lots of help for field work!
School has been going awesome for Jake. He loves every day. He had his first Grandparents Day, his first Marathon fundraiser and lots of others. He still complains about getting up in the morning but I haven't heard one complaint about school. I've been asked to be the co-chair for the school's big fundraiser, the Dinner and Auction. I'm still thinking about it. I think I am going to do it, which means I'll have to be chair for at least one year, but I want to make sure I've thoroughly thought it through.
Over MEA we went to visit the Middendorf's for a day. It was the first time we got to meet baby Wyatt - what a sweet thing. The boys got to play and fight a little and then we came home. It is fun to get together with friends and their kiddos but I do miss the quiet time with my girlfriends. I know it will come back again one day!
Here's a little photo tale of other things we've done.

Jake, Ben and I went for a fall walk at St. John's one afternoon after school. It was gorgeous out and we all had a good time. We parked so we could walk across the bridge over the freeway. The boys have been asking about it for a few years - now they experienced it for themselves.

Picking pumpkins at Grandpa Ken's farm. Sam is walking with Grandma and Grandpa to the pumpkin patch. |
Ben is helping to carry the pumpkins out as Grandpa is cutting the stems.
Even Sam got into it. Jake helped too by finding the pumpkins and carrying them up to the car.
The boys and I brought a homemade chocolate cake to Grandpa for his birthday. We played for a bit and had some cake, then I think Grandpa wanted to get out fishing!
Grandpa getting some help blowing out his candles.

Sam getting a little help from Grandma. He always wants to do what the big boys are doing but he's still kind of small.
Celebrating my birthday at my parents. The boys ate the birthday cupcake and the rest of us enjoyed a delicious pumpkin pie - and lots of good food.
My beautiful birthday roses. Jake picked them out for me at WalMart. Yes, I had to pay, but I didn't mind one bit.
Crazy hair day at Jake's school. Ben got in the spirit as well.
Close up of Jake's hair.
Sam and Ben both driving the COZY coupe.
This made Sam's day. He loves to play in the skid loader but really can't drive it himself. Ben was driving it and Sam was crawling after him crying. Ben stopped one time and helped Sam in - it was pretty awesome. They were both all smiles.
Jake spending some time doodling at home. I thought this was pretty cool. He's really gotten a lot better at his name and drawing too. Before this fall he really disliked drawing of any kind and now he's super at it!

We've got a Walker.....
I think we can finally say that Sam is walking. It's been a process but today seemed to be the turning point.
He's been talking 'steps' for more than a month but hasn't really been interested in truly walking. It even got to the point where he was on to my game - if I stood him up and walked a few steps away, wanting him to walk toward me, he'd smile and crawl.
For the last few days he's been walking around all the furniture and has been brave enough to let go occasionally to make it to the next item. Today it even seemed like he thought about walking to something BEFORE he thought about crawling. He walked away from me, picked up a toy and then walked back to me. That's when I decided he could really walk. Jake was pretty excited and couldn't believe that he picked up a toy and walked back to me. We'll see how it goes, he's still pretty wobbly and he's very cautious, a trait I do NOT recall with the other two.
Sam has 8 teeth now and has developed a voice of his own. He is still very mellow most of the time but has certainly realized that in order to be heard in this house, he has to speak up for himself. It is fun to watch his personality develop and shine through. The boys love him dearly but hate that he now wants to join in on their fun.

Jake's First Day of School
Last week Jake started kindergarten at St. Mary's in Melrose. He had a fabulous first day and every day since. He still says that the bus is his favorite part (and of course what worried me the most) but school is racing it to beat it out. Here are the events of the big day:
Having breakfast but not necessarily ready for the camera.
All ready to go!
The boys in the van ready to head down the driveway, it was cold and rainy so we didn't walk.
Mom and Jake waiting for the bus.
Oh here it comes!
Ben and Sam were watching too. It was a big day for all of us.
Jake getting on the bus with Carly and Brent. They were nice enough to come over and get on with Jake the first day.
Friendly bus driver and Jake in the front seat. This was the moment that I got a little emotional, not too bad, no tears, but it was a little strange to see him just take off and be on his way.
Ben played with Play Doh almost the whole day. He's usually busy playing with Jake.
Sam and Ben playing on the couch together while Jake is at school.
Jake's bike waiting for Jake.
Zoe waiting for Jake.
Ben waiting for Jake.
Sam waiting for Jake. (Mom was anxiously waiting as well!).
Ben seeing the bus come around the corner.
Day one over.
All smiles - it was a great day.

Cruising up to the house. We all survived the first day!

Silly Sleepless Sam...
Sam is growing up and he seems to know it himself. Soon after his 1st birthday things began to change. He developed what one might call an 'attitude'. Oh nothing too serious but he sure can have an opinion about things now.
He still isn't walking but he's constantly standing by everything. He's interested to a point in walking but always resorts back to the quickest method of travel, crawling. Yesterday in the sandbox I noticed that he was able to get to standing position without grabbing on to anything. The sand gave him a little extra leverage and he was enjoying it. Of course, he loves stairs and has been successfully climbing up them for some time. He's pretty good about down too as long as it is only a few steps. Our camper has 2 steps inside and he had to figure them out since it's a pretty small space and I really couldn't block them off in any way.
Over Labor Day weekend he got 3 new teeth. Yep 3 almost entirely at the same time. They are all three upper teeth and the 4th isn't too far away. I thought perhaps this would help with his terrible sleeping habits but so far it hasn't proven to make a difference. Not sure what bothers him but he is by far our worst sleeper. He's pretty happy and content otherwise so I haven't worried about it too much but it sure can be frustrating sometimes!
Oh what else? He's cute as a button and hiccups every time he laughs (so did Jake and Ben). He's pretty much given up formula and moved on to milk, though he doesn't really care as long as he can still have his bottle. The bottle, he started a funny thing with it the last week or so. When he takes his bottle before falling asleep he won't let go of it. It is really quite funny, empty or not, he holds on to it with a death grip. I pried it out of his fingers one night and I regretted it - he was screaming mad. After a little more deep sleep his lets go of it. Silly kid.
He doesn't really like the walker too much but outside he tolerates it. We took it along to the shop the other day and helped Curt for awhile, he thought that was pretty fun. When he uses it at our house and gets on the gravel, he actually picks it up and moves it. Pretty smart boy we have!
Mr. Sammers finally getting to enjoy his smash cake. I think it was 3 days or so after his birthday. He shared it with Ben and Jake and had a good time. Not sure if he ever reached the cake but the frosting was great.

Happy Belated Birthday Ben!
Happy Birthday to our big boy Ben.
I'm a little late with the post because we were gone camping all weekend. Ben got to celebrate his birthday with a family party at our house a week ago Sunday and also with the camping crew out at Lake Maria on his actual birthday.
Ben has grown up so much this year and has become quite a dude with quite a personality. He's so lovable, so darn cute and sometimes getting into so much trouble. He's a 100% no matter what he's doing and we love him for it.
We love you Benners!

Happy Birthday Sam
Happy 1st birthday to our baby Sam.
Wow, how time flies. It has been an amazing year and we've all enjoyed having you in our lives soooo much. Your brothers adore you and already you want to be doing what they are doing. When Dad comes home, your eyes brighten and you always insist on a little bit of daddy time. Of course, you love your mama too - chasing me around all day, reminding me to take a few minutes to snuggle.
We love you.
